Rio Grande do Sul. A oposição liderada pelo chefe civil Assis Brasil e diversos grupos militares locais levantam armas em 11 de fevereiro de 1923 que exigem o fim da "era Borges".
No Rio Grande do Sulo grupo de Assis Brasil organizou cinco divisões. Cada uma com um comando independente. Logo foram chamados de "generais". A região da campanha e missões ficou a cargo de Honório Lemes "o Leão do Cavará" e de outro lado as forças governistas na mesma região, o comando era a cargo do Cel. José Antônio Flores da Cunha.
